Tape Encryption

Administrators who enable software encryption in their backup application generally find that their backup time goes up dramatically.  Part of the problem is that encryption is a CPU intensive operation.  However, the bigger problem is that encrypted data is not compressible, so the benefit of the hardware compression in the tape drive is lost.  By adding StorSecure to your backup server, you can offload both compression and encryption to dedicated hardware, thus getting back to your original backup speed.

StorSecure is supported under EMC Retrospect for Windows and Amanda on Linux.  With Amanda, encryption keys are stored in the StorSecure card and key management is done with software included with the card.

Disk based backup

In recent years, many organizations have shifted from tape based backup to disk based backups.  While disk offers a variety of advantages, it lacks hardware compression, which is a standard feature of tape drives.  By adding a StorCompress accelerator to your backup server, you can get back the benefit of hardware compression.  If you would also like to enable encryption, consider the StorSecure series instead.

StorCompress and StorSecure can both be used with disk based backup under EMC Retrospect for Windows and Amanda on Linux.

Web Compression

While content such as images, video and audio are always transferred in compressed form, other Web content such as HTML, JavaScript, XML and CSS are often transferred without compression.  Often this content is generated dynamically, so compression would have to be done in real time.  The WebEnhance family of products offload this compression to high performance, dedicated hardware, to save bandwidth costs and improve page loading times.
