The SC 500 card performs dedicated compression of data. It features 2 compression engines working in tandem to deliver high-speed data compression. The SC 500 is well-suited for disk-to-disk backup. By compressing data before the data is written, the SC 500 allows faster backup and offloads redundant processor cycles.

The SC 500 board implements the industry-standard 'deflate' algorithm and is compatible with the commonly used gzip/zlib software. This ensures that even when the SC 500 card is unavailable, the compressed data can still be decompressed. The card can achieve a compression speed of 260 MB/sec.

The SC 500 works across the x86 Intel platforms for both 32 bit and 64 bit architectures, and has been tested across most of the popular Linux platforms, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server and OpenSolaris.

The SC 500 works with EMC Retrospect and with Amanda.
