Indra Networks announces immediate availability of two new StorCompress cards, the SC VXLe and the SC VXe. These cards implement Indra's new technology which allows for compression and decompression to run in tandem. The algorithm used is the industry standard 'deflate', and the compressed data output from the cards is compatible with gzip and zlib software. This allows compressed data to be decompressed by gzip or zlib software, ensuring that data can be decompressed even if the card is unavailable. The SC VXLe and SC VXe utilize the PCI-Express host bus. Separate engines are used for compression and decompression, allowing users to compress data for writes and decompress data for reads simultaneously. This is especially useful for NAS and SAN storage and for databases, where reads and writes occur at the same time. In applications where the highest data integrity is required, compressed data can be verified by decompressing the data immediately. Recent performance tests have shown the SC VXe card to deliver higher throughput with about half the CPU utilization as compared to software for compression, and similar throughput with almost 5X less CPU utilization for decompression. SC VXLe and SC VXe are integrated into the open source ZFS file system from Sun Microsystems. OEMs developing systems based on ZFS can readily incorporate these cards into their systems. A particularly high value application would be to combine SC VX series board with flash based Solid State Disks (SSDs). Since SSDs are much more expensive in terms of $/GB, compression is more valuable. Further, write performance of many SSDs tends to be significantly lower than read performance. Compression will enhance the write performance by reducing the amount of data to be written. Tests done by Indra Networks show that even for small block I/Os, write performance under ZFS improves with compression. Availability SC VXLe and SC VXe are available immediately.
