Indra Networks unveils compression and encryption for EMC Retrospect and Amanda
San Jose, CA - September 9, 2009

Indra Networks announces immediate availability of the SC 500 and SS 500 cards, to accelerate compression and encryption in backup software packages. In particular, EMC Retrospect and Amanda open source backup are supported.

The SC 500 and SS 500 improve upon the performance of their predecessors, at the same cost. These cards retain all of the features of their predecessors, including the use of the industry-standard 'deflate' algorithm for compression, and, in the case of the SS 500, the use of the AES encryption algorithm, with a variable 128 bit or 256 bit key. The compressed data is compatible with the common gzip and zlib software.

Unlike their predecessors, which used the PCI-X host bus, the SC 500 and SS 500 both use the PCI-Express host bus.

The SC 500 is the first StorCompress card to only offer compression, but not decompression. In data backup applications, decompression is not used very heavily, so software-based compression may suffice.

The SC 500 also has support for the ZFS file system used by OpenSolaris and NexentaStor. The NexentaStor 2.1 incorporates support for this board. In performance tests, SC 500 achieved 159% improvement in compression performance under ZFS file system over a quad core Xeon processor.

The SS 500 provides excellent throughput for encrypted backups. Since it also incorporates compression acceleration, the data can be first compressed and then encrypted. This is important because once encrypted, data is not compressible. This phenomenon slows down tape backup when encryption is enabled. SS 500 allows administrators to avoid these pitfalls and enable encrypted backups without loss of performance. For example, under Retrospect, compression with SS 500 is 92% faster than compression in software on a quad core Xeon processor.
